The interpolation peak is a conditioning phenomenon

Problem

For least squares with p<np<n and fixed design, show that the variance component of the risk is σ2tr⁡((X⊤X)−1Σ)\sigma^2\operatorname{tr}\big((X^\top X)^{-1}\Sigma\big) and that it diverges as λmin⁡(X⊤X)→0\lambda_{\min}(X^\top X)\to0. Using Marchenko–Pastur, locate the divergence at p=np=n and explain why the risk falls again for p>np>n.

Write a complete argument. Every inequality you use should be one you could state precisely.

Solution

Opening this before you have a real attempt on paper is the fastest way to feel like you understand something you cannot reproduce.
