Problem

Let S=∑i=1kZi2S = \sum_{i=1}^kZ_i^2 with ZiZ_i i.i.d. standard normal.

  1. Show EeλS=(1−2λ)−k/2\E e^{\lambda S} = (1-2\lambda)^{-k/2} for λ<1/2\lambda<1/2.
  2. Derive the upper tail bound P(S≥(1+ε)k)≤exp⁡(k2(log⁡(1+ε)−ε))\P(S \ge (1+\eps)k) \le \exp\big(\tfrac k2(\log(1+\eps)-\eps)\big).
  3. Show the exponent is at most −kε2/8-k\eps^2/8 for ε∈(0,1)\eps\in(0,1).

Write a complete argument. Every inequality you use should be one you could state precisely.
